The Rise Of The Taliban

The Taliban are an Islamic extremist group who took control of Afghanistan's government.  The Taliban began as a force in Afghan politics in 1994 during a civil war between the northern and southern parts of Afghanistan. They gained an initial territorial reign in the southern city of Kandahar, and expanded their influence through a mixture of force, negotiation, and bribes. The Taliban captured capital Kabul in 1996 and took control of the national government.

Cities were ruled be a complete Islamic system. No one was allowed to own weapons, women weren’t allowed to work, if women left their home they had to be escorted by a man of their family, women had to wear head-to-toe veils, television was banned, and photos weren’t allowed to be displayed. Nail polish and lipstick was banned as well.  When the Taliban occupied the city of Herat and expelled thousands of girls from the schools, the US didn’t do a thing. At the time, the Clinton administration looked highly on the Taliban because they hoped to build oil pipelines through Afghanistan. In May of 2001, the US gave the Taliban $43 million, supposedly to combat the opium trade. Since September 11th, the US has changed their entire thoughts  and launched a war against the Taliban. Now the US supports the Northern Alliance instead of the Taliban.

One Action Makes A Difference

Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didn’t Call The Police

At 3:20am, young Catherine Genovese was walking from her car to her apartment after work. Seeing a man in the darkness she nervously continued towards a call box for help. Unfortunately, she didn’t even make it passed the street light before he grabbed her.
Lights turned on in a nearby apartment when twenty-eight year old Genovese screamed and pleaded for help when he stabbed her. A man called from his window telling the man to leave her alone, although he left, it wasn’t enough. Struggling to her feet making her way to her apartment, the man returned to stab her again.
Miss Genovese shrieked and again the lights turned on, windows were opened and he left. At 3:35am trying to stand her ground, Miss Genovese was making way to the door of her apartment building. He found her at the bottom of the steps and stabbed her once more, except this time fatally.
The community of 38 didn’t call the police until 3:50 because they didn’t want to get involved, the uncertainties of the situation or their tiredness!
It took the police two minutes to get there.. Had someone just dialed zero when they heard her cry and plead for help, she would be alive. Some people watched and deliberated on what they should do while she was trying to hold onto her life. It 4:25 when the ambulance came to pick up the body of Catherine Genovese. The people didn’t come out until it left.

Intro Piece .

- My Spidy Senses Are Tingling -

One day in New York, Spiderman and Vulture were back at it again; but this time, Spiderman seemed to be having a few problems. After tossing Spiderman into a watertank, Vulture thought that his interruption would no longer be a bother to him. He continued to set his master plan into action. All the while, Spiderman was looking for a way out of his trap. When he tried shooting out his web, nothing happened.. when he tried to climb the walls, the walls were too slimy.. Spiderman seemed to be a little confused on what to do next. Finally, something sparked in Spidermans' head! He knew just the thing to do. Spiderman, at full force jumped to the roof of the tower, bursting through ready to take on his unprepared rival for their second battle. Spiderman was not going to let Vulture mess with the innocent people of his city.
